Bridges Walking Tour!

We started our day at the Bridge Exhibit at the ODOT office on NW Flanders.
Here we set some ground rules for the day and our fabulous guide and bridges guru, Nathan Hoover, explained some of the key vocabulary terms and bridge types we would be seeing throughout the day.

The first bridge we crossed on foot was the Steel Bridge. It is the only double-deck bridge with independent lift in the world (!!!) and the second largest vertical lift bridge in North America, after its neighbor the Hawthorne Bridge.

Checking out the Steel Bridge from the Eastbank Esplanade.

Under the Morrison Bridge after "being roadkill".

We wrapped up the day at the OHSU tram. Being up that high gave us a new perspective of some of Portland's bridges. And its just really cool!

Later on that week we practiced building our own beam bridges in class.
